COVID-19-FIRM ANNOUNCEMENT

Due to the growing global and local concerns about COVID-19, we at Kay Law and Mediation want to ensure the health and safety of our staff, their families and all of our clients. We are doing our best to support our health care system by protecting our clients and all members of our community by Social Distancing. After careful consideration, Kay Law and Mediation has decided to close our office to the public however, our staff will be in the office to continue to work via telephone, fax, email, or video conferencing to assist our clients and to communicate with opposing counsel. We continue to diligently work on your file.

For existing clients and opposing counsel, we can arrange the following:

  • Email correspondence and communication
  • Telephone
  • Facetime
  • Skype
  • Google meet
  • Fax

For our New/Prospective Clients: 

If you are interested in retaining our firm or receiving legal advice with respect to your legal matter, we are doing the following:

  • On-Line intake and ID forms
  • Future Email correspondence and communication
  • Facetime
  • Skype
  • Google meet
  • Fax

In order for new consultations to take place Kay Law and Mediation will take the following steps:

  • Obtain government issued identification that is valid and current;
  • During video conferencing, Kay Law and Mediation will compare the image in the government issued identification provided with the client to be reasonably satisfied that it is the same person;

Please be advised that the Alberta Courts are now closed on an interim basis and we will keep you apprised of all rescheduling of our matters currently in court.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE COURT OF QUEEN’S BENCH RE: COVID-19: SUSPENSION OF SITTINGS ( EDITED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION FOR FAMILY LAW CLIENTS)

To help contain the spread of COVID-19, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench is limiting hearings to emergency or urgent matters only. Emergency matters are those in which serious consequences to persons or harm to property may arise if the hearing does not proceed, or if there is a risk of loss of jurisdiction or expiration of an existing protection or restraining order, including but not limited to:

1. Family Matters:

  • Orders where there is a risk of violence or immediate harm to one of the parties or a child.
  • Orders where there is a risk of removal of a child from the jurisdiction.
  • Emergency Protection Order reviews.

NEW BOOKINGS:

Between March 16 and March 27, 2020 the Court will make no new bookings in any non-emergency or non-urgent matter.

FILING:

Filing processes will remain unaffected. Should changes occur, there will be communications advising as to what those changes are.

COURT HEARINGS:

For matters before the Court of Queen’s Bench previously scheduled between March 16 and March 27, 2020:

Civil and Family Proceedings:

  • All Family, Justice and Masters Chambers matters, including Family Law Special hearings, Half Day Special Chambers hearings and Early Intervention Case Conferences are adjourned sine die;
  • All civil trials that have not yet commenced are adjourned sine die;
  • All civil trials currently in process must be rescheduled in consultation with the trial judge;
  • All JDRs, Pre-trial conferences, Case Management bookings, Case Management Counsel meetings and Review Officer hearings are canceled and must be rescheduled.
